XRP: a closer look
What XRP is
XRP is the native coin of the XRP Ledger, a blockchain launched in 2012 by the founders of what later became Ripple Labs. It was designed for fast and inexpensive international payments.
How XRP works
The XRP Ledger does not use mining: validators agree on the order of transactions through a consensus protocol, and a new ledger closes every 3–5 seconds. All 100 billion XRP were created at launch. Each account must keep a small base reserve of XRP to exist on the ledger.
What XRP is for
XRP is used for cross-border settlement, as a bridge currency between fiat currencies and for fast transfers between exchanges.
Sending XRP
XRP addresses start with r. Exchanges usually use one shared address and identify customers by a Destination Tag — if you send to an exchange without the tag, the funds may not be credited automatically. Transfers settle in seconds with a negligible fee.
Where to keep XRP
Use a wallet that supports the XRP Ledger, such as Xaman or hardware wallets. Remember that part of the balance is locked as the account reserve.
What to keep in mind
