What a halving actually is

It is a rule baked into the coin itself: every 840,000 blocks the block reward is cut in half. New LTC arrives more and more slowly until the supply hits its ceiling of 84 M LTC.

Where the date comes from

We count from the remaining blocks and the average block time over the past day (~2.6 min). Blocks are found unevenly, so the estimate drifts by a few days: the halving is tied to block 3,360,000, not to a calendar date.
