What a halving actually is

It is a rule baked into the coin itself: every 210,000 blocks the block reward is cut in half. New BTC arrives more and more slowly until the supply hits its ceiling of 21 M BTC.

Where the date comes from

We count from the remaining blocks and the average block time over the past day (~10.4 min). Blocks are found unevenly, so the estimate drifts by a few days: the halving is tied to block 1,050,000, not to a calendar date.
