What a halving actually is

It is a rule baked into the coin itself: every 210,000 blocks the block reward is cut in half. New BCH arrives more and more slowly until the supply hits its ceiling of 21 M BCH.

Bitcoin Cash split from Bitcoin in August 2017 at block 478,558, so the first two halvings are shared. After that the block heights still match, but the dates drift apart.

Where the date comes from

We count from the remaining blocks and the average block time over the past day (~10.1 min). Blocks are found unevenly, so the estimate drifts by a few days: the halving is tied to block 1,050,000, not to a calendar date.
