Litecoin: a closer look

What Litecoin is

Litecoin (LTC) was created by Charlie Lee in 2011 as a lighter, faster version of Bitcoin. It is one of the oldest cryptocurrencies still in active use.

How Litecoin works

Litecoin uses Proof of Work with the Scrypt algorithm and produces a block about every 2.5 minutes — four times more often than Bitcoin. The supply is capped at 84 million coins and the reward halves roughly every four years. Since 2022 the optional MWEB extension allows confidential transactions.

What Litecoin is for

LTC is used for fast, inexpensive transfers and payments, and as a way to move value between exchanges when Bitcoin fees are high.

Sending LTC

Litecoin addresses start with L, M or ltc1. Fees are low, and a transfer typically gets its first confirmation within a few minutes.

Where to keep Litecoin

LTC is supported by virtually all multi-currency and hardware wallets.

What to keep in mind

Litecoin closely follows the overall market and Bitcoin in particular; the price can change sharply.
