What a halving actually is

It is a rule baked into the coin itself: every 1,680,000 blocks the block reward is cut in half. New ZEC arrives more and more slowly until the supply hits its ceiling of 21 M ZEC.

In December 2019 the Blossom upgrade cut the Zcash block from 150 seconds to 75. The reward was halved at the same time so the issuance pace would not change (12.5 ZEC per 150 seconds became 6.25 ZEC per 75), and the halving interval was doubled — which is why halvings still land roughly every four years.

Where the date comes from

We count from the remaining blocks and the average block time over the past day (~1.3 min). Blocks are found unevenly, so the estimate drifts by a few days: the halving is tied to block 4,406,400, not to a calendar date.
